Chilliwack Hiking Club Frequently Asked Questions
Thanks for taking the time to explore our club. Below are answers to some frequently asked questions:
If you have questions about the new hiking club website, pre-registration, or payment methods, see FAQ's #14 and onwards below
QUESTION 1: Who can join this club?
ANSWER: Anyone can join the Chilliwack Hiking Club. It's open to men and women. You don't even have to live in Chilliwack to become a member. If you are under 19, you are welcome to join us if accompanied by a parent or guardian. Got any questions? Don't hesitate to drop us a note.
QUESTION 2: Do women go on your hikes?
ANSWER: Yes! This club is for men and women of all ages and physical fitness levels. If you're a woman who wants to come along, why not invite a female friend then you can be assured of some female companionship -- although most of the time there are other women who will come on the hikes. Don't be shy. Got any questions? Don't hesitate to drop us a note.
QUESTION 3: Is this a club for super-fit mountaineers or for regular people like me?
ANSWER: This club is for "regular folk". We strive to offer a wide range of types of hikes to match different fitness and experience levels. You don't have to have a beard and a pet bear and have climbed a bunch of hard mountains to join this hiking club. We're interested in being a place where people can get out and get some exercise and meet other people and not have to be in awesome shape or have "all the right gear". Got any questions? Don't hesitate to drop us a note.
QUESTION 4: What kinds of hikes do you do?
ANSWER: We schedule mostly day hikes and a handful of overnight hikes throughout the year. Got any questions? Don't hesitate to drop us a note.
QUESTION 5: Can I bring my dog or other pet along on a hike?
ANSWER: We don't allow dogs along on hikes
QUESTION 6: How can I get involved?
ANSWER: Become a member today and/or consider volunteer opportunities with the hiking club. Contact us for volunteer opportunities
QUESTION 7: Do I have to drive all the way to Chillwack or does the hiking club arrange transpotation?
ANSWER: For hikes that are West of Chilliwack (for example, let's say the hike is in North Vancouver) we arrange meeting points in appropriate locations (ie Abbotsford, Langley, Vancouver, etc). People from these different cities meet at the arranged meeting points and then carpool together. Each of these "sub groups" then meet at the trailhead parking lot at a pre-arranged time and everyone hikes together. The hiking club does not have a dedicated vehicle for transporting hikers, but instead members carpool together in their personal vehicles. Drivers of carpools are paid varying amounts from their passengers based on distance travelled.
QUESTION 8: How much should I pay my hiking club carpool driver?
ANSWER: As a general rule we work with a base amount of $5 per person for local hikes. For drives that are longer we will suggest a higher amount such as $10 to $15 per person, for example. It's up to each individual hiker to pay their own driver at the beginning of the drive.
QUESTION 9: How old are members?
ANSWER: We have parents who carry their babies on their backs on some of the easier hikes and we have retirees who come on our long hard mountain treks...and everyone in between. Don't let your age get in the way of coming. Most members probably fall into the 25-50 age range.
QUESTION 10: What days do you hike
ANSWER: We usually do all day hikes on Saturdays. We schedule some easier afternoon hikes on Sundays. We don't do weekday hikes at this time.
QUESTION 11: I don't have a 4x4 but I want to come on your upcoming hike that requires a 4x4 to access the trailhead. Will there be a seat available for me in someone's 4x4?
ANSWER: We rely on members to provide transportation for all events and we attempt to carpool as much as possible. We do not know how many 4x4's will be available until the day of the hike. There's always a chance that there are more people who want to go on a hike than there are seats available.
Question 12: What's the difference between Free Trial Membership and Paid Membership?
Answer: The only difference between Free Trial and Paid membership is that Free Trial members are able to register for and attend only two events. Paid members can attend an unlimited number of events for one year from the date they purchase their membership.
Question 13: How do I pre-register for an event?
Answer: Go to this website and login to your account. (If you aren't a free or paid member yet then you have to sign up for membership first) Once you're logged into your account, then click on "Schedule" then select the event you want to register for. Then click register. That's it. In summary, here's the steps:
1. Login at HikeChilliwack.com
2. Click Events
3. Click on Desired Event
4. Click Register
Question 14: I don't have access to the Internet. How can I pre-register for an event?
Answer: Everyone must pre-register themselves for all events online. No exceptions. We don't have the resources/volunteers to offer offline pre-registration via phone, fax email or mail. If you don't have Internet at home, try at work or use a public Internet terminal such as the local library.
Question 15: I can't or don't want to pay for my membership online using Paypal and a credit card. Can I pay by cheque or cash?
Answer: While we stongly encourage everyone to pay for their membership using the provided secure online payment system, we recognize that a few of you may not have credit cards. For these rare cases we will accept mailed-in cheques for CDN$34.99 made out to the Chilliwack Hiking Club and mailed to:
Chilliwack Hiking Club
200-45668 Storey Avenue
(Be sure to include the full name and phone number and email address of the member or members you're paying for with each cheque.) If you'd like to save $5 pay online with credit card and only pay $29.99 for your year's membership.
Question 14: I need to make a change to my hiker profile. How do I do that?
Answer: Go to this website and login to your account and make whatever text or photo changes you want to your profile yourself. If you want to replace your profile photo just upload a new one and the old one will be deleted.
