Chilliwack Lake Eco Reserve Hiking Trail
Time: 3 hours
Distance: 6km
Elevation gain: 50 meters
Difficulty: This hike is not dificult and would be rated as very easy if the trail was well maintained. The untangled, walkable part of the trail is about 3 hours round trip. If you go, be prepared to get wet, as the trail can be flooded at times and occasionally requires a bit of knee deep wading. Don't worry, there's no Indiana Jones stuff but be prepared, this is not a regularly maintained trail.
Description: This is more of a nature experience than an exercise hike. The trail follows a river, so it is basically flat. Many large old growth Cedars, Fir and Hemlock can be found along this trail, with some of them being quite remarkable in stature. This trail continues south to the American border, but most people only hike about an hour or so before turning around.
Photos: coming soon
How to get there: From Highway #1 (Trans-Canada Highway) in Chilliwack, take Exit #119 heading
South. Follow Vedder Road through Sardis until the 3-way stop directly before the Vedder River Bridge. Turn left here onto Chilliwack Lake road at the stop sign.
Follow Chilliwack Lake Road to the end of the pavement. Keep driving straight. Don't turn right into the main entrance to the Chilliwack Lake Provincial Park. Continue straight onto a dirt forestry road. Follow the forestry road along the perimeter of the lake until you reach the blocked Depot Creek Bridge, near the south end of the lake. Park here. Be aware that the road around Chilliwack lake is quite rough (lots of potholes, sketchy conditions depending on weather). It can be handled slowly with a car but please don't bring your new Mercedes. Truck or SUV (one you're willing to get dirty) is recommended.
Drivers: Remember to print out these directions if you'll be driving and not getting a ride with someone else who knows where they're going. We will need people to drive others from Chilliwack , so if you've got a car and are able to drive, please print this page.
Riders: As with all Chilliwack Hiking Club hikes, if you're riding (carpooling) in someone else's car, be prepared to pay the driver $6 for gas before you leave for the hike.
See event description on calendar page for pre-departure meeting place for when the club is doing this hike next.
