Description
This trail leads to some great views. It basically follows a 4X4 road up into the alpine on an easy grade. About 20 minutes from the start of the trail, there is an option of getting off the road and using a trail for about an hour. The main road/trail leads first to the subalpine Red Heather Meadows camping area and continues along a ridge into a beautifull meadow and two, little alpine lakes. These are the lakes that the hike is named after. The first lake is for swimming, the second is for drinking. Shortly after the lakes you will see the shelter (almost a miniature lodge)and then the camping area. The meadow
area is an excellent turn around point for a day trip or a great access point to the various peaks surrounding it. The winter
shelter and the wide, well marked trail, make this an excellent winter destination. This shelter is only open during the winter months and provides sleeping and cooking acomidations. Be
prepared for parking and camping fees.
The shelter and camping fees can be paid at the Diamond Head parking lot in an envelope. Cash only.
