Description
Frosty Mountain is definitely worth the climb. If you have never done any serious hiking in Manning Park, this will give you a good idea of what the fuss is about. The trail starts at the Lightning Lakes day use parking lot. Pay your money for the parking permit, put on your pack and head to the East side of Lightning Lake (Left hand side when facing the lake). Keep going around the lake, cross the damn and you will shortly see a sign for Frosty mountain trail on your left. You start to climb immediately and hike up switch backs for about 7 kms. Here you will find the Frosty creek camp. A little past you will enter the sub alpine and see larch trees, which are peculiar trees that look like evergreens but actually shed their leaves in the fall. As you keep traveling the terrain becomes more open and rocky and leads to a final ridge walk up to the summit. The summit view gives a great panorama of Manning park's mountains and ridges. If it is a clear day and you forget your camera, you will not be happy. To return to the parking lot, head down the same way or do the Windy Joe loop which will take you down a different ridge and add a couple of hours and kms to your hike.
Notes: 1. Bring plenty of water. 2. Make sure you're well protected from the sun (or worse, the rain) 3. Don't forget your camera.
